You Are Not Alone

A private community for women healing from abuse, trauma & betrayal. Connect. Reclaim. Thrive.

The Reality of 2026

In today's world, countless women find themselves trapped in toxic relationships and dynamics that slowly erode their sense of self. Whether it's narcissistic abuse, domestic violence, emotional manipulation, or financial control, the patterns are insidious, often invisible to those on the outside, and deeply damaging to those living through them.

Healing begins when a woman is no longer forced to carry her story in isolation. Safe Sisterhood was created to meet that need, offering a secure, confidential space where women can document their experiences, connect with others who understand, and move toward recovery at their own pace. This is more than a community. It is a protected environment built to support the women healing today and the daughters who will follow them, a place where safety, dignity, and the solidarity of sisters are the foundation of everything we do.

A woman in contemplative shadow

Understanding the Patterns

Narcissistic abuse and domestic violence are rarely obvious at first. They arrive disguised as love, as concern, as the ordinary rhythm of a relationship. Emotional manipulation, gaslighting, financial control, and isolation from friends and family are the tactics that operate in the shadows, gradually eroding a woman's trust in her own perception and reality.

For decades, women have needed a safe space that allows them to document their experiences, connect with others who truly understand, and build a steady path toward freedom. A platform where their identity is protected, their dignity is respected, and those who cause harm are held accountable.

Protective shield of light

Why Safe Sisterhood Exists

Phoenix Software created Safe Sisterhood because silence protects abusers. This platform combines powerful resources, community support, and protective features, including our VIP Safety List to warn sisters about known predators, security tools to document incidents, and strategies from experts who specialize in trauma recovery and leaving toxic situations.

We maintain strict standards to keep trolls, spam accounts, and bad actors out. This is a serious platform for serious members only.

If you would like to join the team: This is a women-only app, built by Phoenix, for women, operated by women.

The Day I Chose Myself

There is a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from years of shrinking yourself to fit inside someone else's anger. You learn to read the room before you enter it. You learn to pre-apologize. You learn to want things quietly, in the back of your chest, where they can't be found and taken. I grew up watching my mother do this for my father and I swore I never would. Then I spent a decade doing exactly that for a man who reminded me, daily, that I was lucky he stayed. He never hit me. I want to say that clearly because for a long time it was the reason I didn't think what was happening to me counted. He never left a mark you could photograph. What he did instead was steadier and in some ways harder to name he undermined every decision I made, managed every dollar I spent, told me my friends were bad influences until I stopped seeing them, mocked my opinions in front of his family, isolated me from mine, and when I cried about any of it, asked me why I was always so sensitive. I started therapy on my own, in secret. I found a therapist who specialized in coercive control. The first time she said the words 'emotional abuse' in the context of my marriage, I argued with her. I said, 'But he's not mean, exactly. He's just...' and she waited and I couldn't finish the sentence. It took me almost a year of weekly sessions to understand what had been done to me. And another six months to build the internal foundation I needed to leave to trust my own perceptions again, to believe that I deserved a life with more room in it. I filed for divorce on a Tuesday morning. I remember it was sunny and I wore a yellow blouse because I wanted to feel something bright. The grief was real. Even now, two years out, there are moments of genuine mourning for the version of the marriage I had hoped we could build, for the years I spent inside it. Grief and relief can exist at the same time. That's something I wish someone had told me earlier. I am in a relationship now with someone who asks what I think and then actually listens to the answer. Who leaves space for me to be a full person. It still surprises me sometimes. That's how deep the old grooves ran. But I am learning. Slowly, joyfully, stubbornly I am learning what it feels like to take up my own space.

I Stopped Calling It Love

For seven years, I told myself that what we had was just passionate. That the way he'd grab my wrist when I tried to leave a room was possessive but not dangerous. That the bruises I explained away to coworkers were just proof of how intensely he cared. I met him when I was twenty-two. He was charming in a way that felt like sunlight warm, all-consuming, impossible to look away from. He told me on our third date that he'd never felt this way about anyone, and I believed him completely. I still believe he believed it too. That's the part no one talks about abusers often love you, in the only way they know how. Broken, consuming, violent love. The first time he hit me we were engaged. I told no one. We got married six months later in a white dress I had altered twice because the stress had made me lose so much weight. I stayed because I was ashamed. I stayed because we had a son together and I had been raised to believe that a family must stay whole. I stayed because every time I thought about leaving, he would cry genuinely cry and beg me to remember who we used to be. I stayed because I didn't have my own bank account, didn't know how to file taxes by myself, hadn't been to a social event alone in four years. The night I left, he had broken three of my fingers trying to take my phone. I drove myself to the ER with my son asleep in the backseat. The nurse who checked me in looked at my hand, then looked at my eyes, and said quietly, 'Is there someone doing this to you?' It was the first time someone had asked me directly. I started sobbing so hard they had to close the curtain. A social worker came. She had a kind face and a binder full of resources. She didn't tell me what to do. She just said, 'You get to choose. Whatever you choose, I'll help you.' I chose to leave. That was three years ago. My fingers healed crooked but they healed. My son is in therapy and doing beautifully. I have my own apartment, my own credit card, my own name on a lease. Some nights I still wake up afraid he's in the room. But most nights now, I sleep through. If you're reading this and you're still inside it I see you. Leaving isn't a moment. It's a hundred small decisions. You don't have to figure it all out tonight. Just let one person see your eyes.

Running at 53

I started running the year I left my husband. I hadn't run since high school gym class. I was fifty-three years old with bad knees and a grief so large it had its own weather system, and one morning I just laced up my sneakers and walked out the front door of my sister's house and started moving. I had been married for twenty-eight years. We had raised three children together. We had a mortgage and a boat and a timeshare in Florida and a life that, from the outside, looked like exactly what I had worked for. What was invisible from the outside was the way he looked at me when I laughed too loud at a party. The way he managed to make every decision about money feel like a lesson I had failed to learn. The way he called me stupid not cruelly, not shouting, but the way you'd say it about a dog who peed on the carpet. Patiently. Repeatedly. Until I believed him. Leaving at fifty-three meant dismantling a life I had spent three decades constructing. It meant telling my adult children something I had protected them from for years. The youngest took it hardest he was twenty and away at college and he called me crying, asking why I hadn't told them sooner. I didn't have a good answer. The best I could offer was: I wasn't ready until I was ready. My oldest daughter had known for years. She told me she had been waiting. That her wedding planning had included a quiet conversation with her fiancΓ© about how to make sure I would be okay after she moved away. That broke something open in me. The understanding that my children had been quietly worrying about me while I was quietly pretending everything was fine. So I ran. Badly at first a block, then two blocks, then a painful mile, then two. My knees complained. I developed a blister that lasted three weeks. I bought actual running shoes from a real running store and the young man who fitted me asked if I was training for anything and I said yes, I'm training for the rest of my life, and he looked at me like I was a little unusual and I smiled all the way home. I ran my first 5K the following spring, eight months after I left. My children all came. My youngest son ran the last quarter mile with me, matching my pace, not speaking. When I crossed the finish line he hugged me for a long time. I'm fifty-six now. My knees still complain. I run four days a week along the river trail near my apartment. In the mornings the light comes across the water in a way that makes me feel like there is still an enormous amount of good left in this life. It is never too late to decide you deserve more. Not at thirty, not at forty, not at fifty-three. Your life is not over. It is, in all the most important ways, just beginning.
